I need a bike rack but I don't want a permanent hitch mount. Those things are heavy and I only need it occasionally. Anyone tried those strap-on hatch mounted bike racks? Are they worth it? I'm worried about damaging my car or the bike.

A friend has one, I cant remember the name, but they are so worth it..

Strap on hatch racks are a classic solution for occasional bike hauling, but they definitely come with some caveats. They're way lighter and easier to store than hitch mounts, which is a huge plus. However, you're right to be concerned about damage. Those straps can scratch your paint if they're not properly secured, and you've got to be super careful with the bike's weight distribution, or you risk denting the hatch. Plus, they can block your rear view and taillights, which is a safety concern. If you go that route, invest in high-quality rack with good padding, use painter's tape to protect your paint, and practice loading and securing your bike before you hit the road. Honestly, if you can swing it, a roof rack might be a less risky option, but it's all about what works best for your needs and budget.

I get it, hitch racks are a pain for occasional use. Strap-on hatch racks can be a good solution, as long as you get one with solid reviews. If you’re careful with placement, they shouldn’t damage your car or bike. Just make sure you’re not treating your car like a cargo truck, and you should be good!
